THE STARTLING ALLURE OF ESCAPISM WITH DETROIT TECHNO FOUR DECADES STRONG

Circa 1981, Detroit native, Juan Atkins (then, part of the group Cybotron) released Alleys Of Your Mind from their debut project Enter (released in 1983).

A ‘sound’ inspired by names like P Funk and the German group Kraftwerk, the track was a seminal moment.

While it marked (for many aficionados) the beginning of Detroit Techno, it was the group Belleville Three which included Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May who propelled the genre from the streets of Detroit to more global recognition. The sound helping to usher in the UK’s very own hardcore and jungle scene.

Forged in that independent spirit of ‘youth’, and post-industrial Detroit, the scene captured the social/political mood at the time. It was a beacon for escapism, unity and a resistance movement.

Here at itchysilk, we decided to take a brief look at this mesmerising genre with Alicia Marie Eno Juhl manager of Minimal Detroit.

Detroit Techno created from ‘grit’

Detroit is in itself a mind state. Pivotal in all senses in that the sounds are Created from the grit and the industrial environment at the time it’s a distinct sound. Artists from across the board feel this. The Detroit sound is world known and will continue to provide the base from which techno is made from.

Without the pioneers….

The significance of Juan Atkins and Jeff Mills cannot be overshadowed….by anyone! To me they are the pinnacles of Detroit, and they continue to innovate the scene and the music today world-wide.

Terrence Dixon

I met Terrence Dixon , the creator of Minimal Detroit (MD) when I was 18 years old. It was a magical time. I would drive down to the “city” every weekend with my friends and just be immersed in the music and the culture. Terrance as one of those pioneers was and remains an innovator. He exemplifies the past merging into the future. His live sets are mind-blowing.

Minimal Detroit…doing it for the love.

Records are selling, but it is hard to make money in this current climate. Making money from music is not as simple as before. Perhaps a bit of a cliché, but honestly, we do this for the love of the music and the culture. We only release one record per year, but we aim for quality rather than quantity. This year look out for Domenique Xander and Tomasz Kozlowski with their brilliant releases.
