THE SIX BILLION DOLLAR MAN

Directed by  the two-time Emmy director Eugene Jarecki this riveting piece of documentary film can list the prestigious Cannes Festival as an accolade. And rightly so.

Perhaps I should lavish a plethora of superlatives to entice you; “magnificent” “stupendous” “held me from start to finish”. But it feels too ‘Hollywood’ to do that. This just ain’t that type of documentary.

Six Billion Dollar Man is a serious expose. It won’t leave you feeling good. There is no Hollywood ending. It will progressively make you anxious.

This is the most significant and important documentary in 2025.

In these murky and infested waters, teeming with predatory Leviathans, no one is safe: Julian Assange knew/knows this all too well.

It shines a glaring and scary light on the ‘system’, ‘the governments’, figures like Trump, war atrocities committed by the US (and then covered up), moles and the stuff that ‘us’ mere mortals are not supposed to know or see.

Hidden in the cloudy waters of bureaucracy, media propaganda, government machinations, strangle holds on social media and the whims of the super-rich ‘they’ sit scheming and watching. And should anybody feel fit to challenge them:  They will enact serious, life changing and if needed fatal consequences.

In these murky and infested waters, teeming with predatory Leviathans, no one is safe: Julian Assange knew/knows this all too well.

Eugene Jarecki skilfully takes us on a journey of realisation as the Leviathans circle Julian Assange. From his self-imposed exile in the Ecuadorian Embassy after claims of rape which surfaced in 2010, his attempts to avoid extradition to Sweden (and worryingly then to the US) and his imprisonment in Belmarsh-we watch .

And while I paint this scary vision of Leviathans circling Julian Assange and the ‘system’s’ wish to “take him out” the true fear is much worse.

Assange gained his freedom in 2024 where he plead guilty for one count of conspiring to obtain and disclose classified documents under the Espionage Act.

The Six Million Dollar Man

This Is an attack on journalism.

Julian Assange is a complicated and at times “unlikeable person” as we are told in the documentary. But his ‘likeability’ is not important. He is a journalist, and this is important.  He sought to uncover truths as any journalist should do. After all this is a fundamental necessity in any democracy. The freedom for press to report and uncover issues. It’s the cornerstone to keep the system ‘true’ ( we hope).

As our anxiety reaches a critical point we discover the true purpose of this documentary. Democracy and freedom are under attack by the same people who profess to champion it.

“We’re fucked “ says one reporter in the documentary. And we are. The Leviathans are closing in: chomping and maiming with glee.

Julian Assange was the perfect example to keep us in ‘our’ subjugated place.

Six Billion Dollar Man is out now, and I urge you to watch it-fuck the popcorn you don’t need it, get some clonazepam.
