Having dropped releases for labels like; John Talabot's, Hivern Discs, Young Turks and Permanent Vacation the Spanish producer Miguel Barros aka Pional has already set his standards extremely high.
Releases like Invisible/Amnaza (circa 2013) show that the multi-instrumentalist has a penchant for creating immersive electronica soundscapes. Of course no producer would be worth their salt without a catalogue of remixes –Chained (2012) for The XX and Soft Kiss (2012) for Lemonade are two to get aurally acquainted with.
His latest project is his first release under the Counter Records label called When Love Hurts. It's an ep inspired by ‘love' and ‘loss' and sees Pional showing us his bounteous blessings in the talent department dropping vocals (to add to his productive flair) on all but one of the four tracks on this warming release.
The opening Casualty with its intro drum pattern which somehow evoked memories of michael jackson's, Billie Jean (1982) is an intense slow burner that reaches the obligatory satisfying climax: indeed a post-coital cigarette will be needed, before going in for rounds; two and three. Track four, The Way That You Like featuring vocals by the ghostly sounds of Empress Of is a yearning number exploring that ‘love' that balances precariously between intense and obsessive and beautifully rounds off this stirring project.
