Exploring Identity, Culture, and Sound at the SXSW Festival: Zola Marcel on Heritage and Artistic Expression

Zola Marcel explores how her music is shaped by curiosity, cultural identity, and human connection. Rather than fear, she approaches performance with a desire to understand how her work resonates across different communities, seeing music as a shared conversation rather than an individual act.

Raised in London after moving from Zimbabwe as a child, Marcel remained deeply connected to her roots through language, family, and tradition. As she grew older, she began to reconnect more intentionally with her heritage, discovering how much of her culture—particularly pre-colonial history—she still had to learn.

Her project Home reflects a journey of cultural rediscovery and unity, drawing on her dual Shona and Sotho heritage. Through it, she explores themes of belonging, spirituality, peace, and the connection between past and present.

Alongside her music, her studies in African Studies have deepened her understanding and inspired new creative work. Influenced by South African jazz and contemporary sounds, Marcel’s art becomes a reflection of both her ancestry and her evolving identity—grounded in the belief that culture, community, and purpose are inseparable.
